Dog-friendly days out in Salisbury

A cathedral city with the tallest spire in England, water meadows made famous by Constable, and Stonehenge on the doorstep. Here is how we would spend a day in Salisbury with your dog.

Salisbury Cathedral and its record-breaking spire

Salisbury grew up around its cathedral, and eight centuries on that soaring spire, the tallest in the country, still governs the skyline. It is a compact, walkable city ringed by chalk downland and threaded by rivers, with the water meadows that Constable painted lying just beyond the close. Both the cathedral and the ancient stones out on the plain welcome dogs, which makes this a city where history and a good long walk sit side by side.

A cathedral and a meadow walk in the morning, an ancient monument in the afternoon, a good lunch and a pint in a country inn is the shape of a Salisbury day. This is how we would spend it, with the real, well-reviewed places we would actually take our own dog.

Morning: cathedral and water meadows

The Town Path across Harnham Water Meadows with the cathedral spire beyond

Well-behaved dogs on leads are welcome inside Salisbury Cathedral, so you can stand your dog beneath that record-breaking spire and see one of the four surviving copies of Magna Carta. Then walk it off across the Harnham Water Meadows, following the tarmac Town Path out through the meadows to the spot where Constable set up his easel, the spire framed across the water. It is one of the great short walks in England, and open to dogs on leads all year.

For a wilder leg-stretch, the downland at Pepperbox Hill and the woods at Bentley Wood, both a short drive out, give a dog proper open country.

Ancient stones and a ruined castle

Out on the plain, Stonehenge needs no introduction, and dogs on leads are welcome around the visitor centre and, via the free permissive paths across the landscape, out among the wider monuments. For a quieter, dog-friendlier ancient day, Old Wardour Castle is a romantic ruined tower by a lake where dogs on leads are welcome throughout, with water bowls laid on. In the city, Arundells, the former home of a prime minister, welcomes dogs in its lovely riverside garden.

Salisbury through the seasons

Spring

The water meadows are lush and the downland comes alive. A Town Path walk with the spire ahead and a coffee at the Yard is Salisbury in spring at its best.

Summer

The city and Stonehenge get busy, so start early, carry water, and enjoy the cool of the cathedral and the shade of the riverside walks in the heat of the afternoon.

Autumn

The meadows and downland turn golden and the crowds thin. Crisp river walks, quiet ancient stones and cosy country pubs make for a lovely autumn day in Wiltshire.

Winter

The cathedral looks magnificent against a low winter sky. Wrap up for a brisk water-meadow walk, then thaw out by the fire at the Compasses with a muddy dog at your feet.
